General Tso’s Chicken

This recipe is a Clinton Kelly original. I found it at Shrinking Kitchen when I was on the hunt for weekly meal plans and SK didn’t disappoint. There are 85 weeks of meal plans on there, which I highly recommend! One of my favorites is the General Tso’s Chicken…. I’m recreating this recipe on my blog for easier access in the future!

For sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 4 garlic cloves (I used chopped)
  • 2 teaspoon fresh ginger (grated)
  • 3 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound broccoli (blanched)

For chicken:

  • 3 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 pound boneless chicken breast (cut into 1 inch pieces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil


  • Chopped green onion
  • sesame seeds

We served ours with brown rice.


Step 1: Prepare rice and blanch broccoli

Step 2: Mix water and cornstarch, then add garlic, ginger, honey, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, mix cornstarch, salt and pepper together until combined. Add chicken and already blanched broccoli and toss until coated.

Step 4: Heat a large nonstick skillet with vegetable oil. Shake excess coating off the chicken and cook in batches until golden, 4-6 minutes.

Step 5: Add the sauce mixture and cook until the sauce has thickened.

Serve with rice and top with garnish!
